Mornington Peninsula take home Excellence in Road Safety Award for innovative project

Sydney, Australia - 23rd October 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mornington Peninsula Shire has won the Excellence in Road Safety Award at the Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC). The successful project used Connected Vehicle data to measure the effectiveness of compact roundabouts in 80km/h zones.

The project trialled low-cost compact roundabouts at select rural intersections to address high-speed travel at conflict points, known to cause road accidents. The trial found that these treatments successfully lowered vehicle speeds to 30km/h, improving safety compared to previous stop and give way signage. This aligns with Safe System standards for road design.

Connected Vehicle data was used to measure average and 85th percentile speeds from all approach directions. At the Hodgins Road and Stumpy Gully Road roundabout, average speeds were lowered to 21-24.9km/h, and 85th percentile speeds to 25-35.4km/h. At the Merricks Road and Stanleys Road roundabout, average speeds were decreased to 18.5-32.1km/h, and 85th speeds to 25.6-39km/h. Both roundabouts were in areas with an 80km/h speed limit.

Connected Vehicle data, which comes directly from vehicles, provided a deeper insight than traditional methods like tube counts or road loops. These traditional methods could not be safely installed at the intersection conflict points due to the high-speed environment posing a risk to workers. Tube counts or road loops also only capture speeds at one point, whereas Connected Vehicle data captures it along any length of road and captures additional data, like g-forces.

“The success of this project shows this data isn’t just about numbers; it’s about creating safer communities,” said Roberto Evangelio, Director of Transport Engagement at Compass IoT.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council was also highly commended at last year’s ARSC for their 'Safer Speeds on Rural Roads' project, where they implemented 80km/h speed limits on high-risk rural roads.

Mornington Peninsula’s projects show Australian councils are revolutionising their approach to road safety by using cutting-edge Connected Vehicle technology, protecting their communities and making every street safer.
