Tell us about yourself?

Ever since I was a kid, machines, but especially “thinking machines”, have fascinated me to no end. It is only natural that I would have pivoted towards an engineering role, which over time has involved both hardware and software.

My role has changed from being an implementer into more of the abstract but I can still be very hands-on. The concept of making all this technology safe and sound is something that I am very concerned about as our lives become more dependent on all these machines, which is why I am security-oriented at this point.

What are the top 3 trends in your transport/smart cities niche to watch out for in the next 5 years?

- An acceleration in the interaction between critical infrastructure and external networks full of intelligent devices as society optimises the efficiency of resource consumption using intelligent technologies - coupled with an increase in cyber exposure

- A rapid migration towards cloud computing (and many cloud platforms working together) for the management of and analysis of intelligent buildings, cities and transportation infrastructures as thousands of data points must be constantly and rapidly processed.

- Leveraging the power, speed and density of 5G networks as the “glue” by which future smart cities will be tied together.

How do you and/or your company innovate?

Being an innovator requires two key things. First, you must be observant of the changes in the world around you and the ever-changing needs of society at large, and be willing to embrace those changes and take advantage of those opportunities.

Second, I said boundless, but no person or company can do everything. To successfully innovate you need to select achievable objectives from a time and capability perspective, and do those well. Then, select good complementary partners to work with you.

Why is encouraging innovation, new ideas, and tech important?

I heard this quote many times, but I don’t know who to attribute it to. Basically “Innovate or die”. If you stand still, you will wither into irrelevance. If you identify, adapt and thoughtfully embrace change, you will succeed and grow.
