Modern Slavery

This Modern Slavery Declaration of Commitment sets out our vision to contribute towards eliminating modern slavery, globally.

Our commitment

Modern slavery is an unconscionable violation of human rights. We recognise our responsibility to ensure that our operations, activities, supply chains, joint ventures and investments are scrupulous in avoiding modern slavery and other human rights harms while ensuring that our staff, suppliers and partners respect and share our commitments to uphold human rights.

In all our endeavours, we will operate on dignity, equality, and mutual respect within a human rights framework. We will act consistently with the Protect, Respect, Remedy framework in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. We expect all employees of Compass to uphold their personal responsibilities and respect human rights.

About this policy

About this statement

Voluntary statement published

This page serves as both Compass IoT's Anti-Slavery Policy and our Modern Slavery Statement. It sets out our approach to identifying and addressing the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking in our operations and supply chain.

The Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018 requires entities with annual consolidated revenue of AU$100 million or more to report annually on modern slavery risks. As a smaller entity, Compass IoT is not currently a mandatory reporting entity under the Act. We publish this statement voluntarily as a matter of principle and in response to the due diligence requirements of our enterprise customers and partners.

Definition

What is modern slavery?

Modern slavery is a term used to describe serious exploitation of people for personal or commercial gain. It encompasses a range of severe human rights abuses including forced labour, debt bondage, human trafficking, child labour, deceptive recruiting, and slavery-like practices.

Under the Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018, modern slavery includes the following types of serious exploitation:

  • Trafficking. The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons for exploitation.
  • Slavery.Exercising powers of ownership over a person, including buying, selling, or hiring them out.
  • Servitude.A condition where a person is not free to stop working or leave their place of work.
  • Forced labour.Labour or services obtained through coercion, threats, or deception.
  • Forced marriage.Marriage entered into without full and free consent.
  • Debt bondage.Using debt as a means of controlling a person.
  • Deceptive recruiting.Deceiving a person about the nature or conditions of their work.
  • Child labour.Work that deprives children of their childhood, potential, and dignity.

Our business

Our operations and structure

Compass IoT is an Australian technology company that provides connected vehicle data and road intelligence software to transport authorities, government agencies and private companies across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and North America.

Our primary operations involve software development, data science, and commercial activities. We are a relatively small organisation employing skilled knowledge workers in a professional office environment. Our workforce is engaged through standard employment contracts subject to Australian employment law, with conditions that meet or exceed applicable minimum standards.

Supply chain

Our supply chain

Compass IoT's supply chain is primarily composed of large, established technology providers. We do not manufacture physical goods and do not engage in industries historically associated with high modern slavery risk.

Our key supply chain relationships include cloud infrastructure providers, software vendors, professional services firms, and OEM data partners. The majority of our suppliers are themselves publicly listed companies or large organisations subject to their own mandatory modern slavery reporting obligations.

Risk assessment

Given the nature of our business — technology and data services with no physical manufacturing — our overall modern slavery risk is assessed as low. The highest relative risk sits within our OEM data partner relationships, where supply chains extend into automotive manufacturing. We mitigate this through partner due diligence and by working only with established, publicly accountable organisations.

Risk management

Risk assessment and due diligence

We assess modern slavery risk as part of our broader vendor onboarding and procurement process. When engaging new suppliers or partners, we consider the nature of their operations, the jurisdictions in which they operate, and any sector-specific risk indicators.

Our due diligence approach includes:

  • Reviewing supplier modern slavery statements and human rights policies where available.
  • Conducting basic checks on new suppliers operating in higher-risk jurisdictions or sectors.
  • Requiring suppliers to warrant, as part of our standard terms, that they comply with applicable modern slavery laws and do not use forced or child labour.
  • Monitoring for media reports or third-party alerts relating to supplier conduct.

We acknowledge that our due diligence processes are proportionate to our size and risk profile. As our business grows and our supply chain expands, we are committed to enhancing these processes accordingly.

Policy commitments

Our commitments and actions

Compass IoT is committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all its business relationships. The following commitments apply to our employees, contractors, and supply chain:

  • We will not knowingly engage, directly or indirectly, with any business or individual involved in modern slavery or human trafficking.
  • We will not use forced, compulsory, or trafficked labour, or engage anyone held in slavery or servitude.
  • We will pay all employees and contractors at or above applicable minimum wage requirements.
  • We will ensure that employment relationships are entered into freely, with clear contracts, and that workers are free to terminate their employment in accordance with applicable law.
  • New suppliers are screened as part of our onboarding process, with particular attention to jurisdictions and sectors carrying higher risk.
  • We will not retaliate against any employee, contractor, or supplier who reports a concern about modern slavery in good faith.
  • We will provide employees with access to training and awareness resources on modern slavery and how to identify and report concerns.
  • We will review and update this statement annually, or sooner if material changes occur to our operations or supply chain.
