Connected Vehicle data finds crash hotspots, otherwise gone unnoticed

Transport authorities across the United Kingdom are revolutionising road safety and risk assessments using cutting-edge Connected Vehicle technology. Data insights from Compass IoT are now actively contributing to safer roads for both drivers and pedestrians. 

Connected Vehicle data, sourced directly from vehicles, provides granular information including speeds, g-forces, near-misses, and travel times. This comprehensive dataset, representative of all traffic on all roads, is proving to be a game-changer for road safety and crash prevention.

Following a tragic pedestrian-bus fatality at a UK crossing, authorities leveraged Compass data to investigate. Speed data showed drivers respected the 30mph limit. However, a deeper dive into g-forces found some harsh braking incidents, surpassing average and 85th percentile values, at lower speeds (15-25mph). 

This suggests drivers were forced into last-minute reactions when pedestrians used the crossing, possibly due to visibility. This critical data, coupled with a recent fatality, indicates a pattern of harsh braking over the past 18 months.

Similarly, Kent City Council has been conducting a proactive safety study, clustering near-miss data to inform their Crash Remedial Programme. The council successfully shortlisted and categorised 16 locations with the near-miss data, shifting their Programme from reactive to proactive.

An example site was Shoreham Road, a rural, single-carriageway with a steep kink and a blind corner. Near-misses were clustered on the corner in both directions. This location had a known collision history, with a one-star iRAP rating.

These projects demonstrate how Connected Vehicle data is a powerful tool for road safety initiatives, empowering authorities to achieve national targets and Vision Zero. 

“Studies like these show the power of our near-miss data set. We’re now investigating to see if we can move beyond identification to earlier prediction by using our g-force data to further enhance risk assessments and contribute to safer roads for all,” said Marinos Tsiplakis, General Manager of Compass IoT.
